Castelli Espresso Due Jacket Black, M

Product Description

If you're looking for luxury and performance in a winter jacket, then the Castelli Espresso Due Jacket is the perfect choice. In designing the Espresso Due, Castelli paid attention to even the smallest details to create the ideal blend of performance, fit, and style. It all starts with the Windstopper X-Fast fabric used extensively throughout the jacket. Made using high-tech circular interlocking polyester, Windstopper X-Fast provides total wind protection while allowing for excellent breathability. In short, it blocks the wind while letting your sweat evaporate, keeping you dry and warm. A soft, lofty microfleece lining is essential for the insulation it provides, and it adds serious comfort. The Windstopper's natural stretch characteristics and 50 Denier outer coverage make the Espresso Due abrasion resistant and durable. The Espresso Due's breathability is further enhanced by the addition of two vertical zippers down the front of the jacket. Ever hit the summit of a long climb in cold weather only to freeze going down the other side? The Espresso's chest vents address this problem: simply unzip them while climbing to allow heat and moisture to escape, then close them while descending to once again block the wind and insulate your torso. As an added bonus, Castelli includes two more zippers extending up along the Espresso Due's wrists, offering yet another ventilation opportunity and allowing you to close the jacket around the cuffs of your gloves to create a tight, heat-protecting seal. Last but not least, a flip-up Thermoflex collar is soft and fleecy on the inside (for warmth and stretch), but treated with silicon on the outside to give the collar slight water repellency. And Thermoflex's natural elasticity enables the collar to form a snug seal around your neck to lock-in warmth while keeping out the elements.Castelli also spent a lot of time dialing-in the Espresso Due's fit.

5Best jacket I have owned
By racerx
I have many cycling jackets from good manufactures such as Gore and Showerpass but this is by far the best cycling jacket I have owned. The jacket is well made and very very warm. I've used this jacket in conditions of 35 degree F up to 47 degree F with just a base layer. I could probably do without a base layer but want a layer to catch sweat. If you ride hard your back will sweat. There is just no getting around it. Even still, you stay warm.
Venting is great. Front zip vents work great for just enough airflow that does not make you cold. They are a little hard to zip while riding but I manage to find them without crashing. The jacket's construction has shoulder vents that are open through the whole back. What Ii mean is, you can put your hand and arm in the shoulder vent and it will go through to the bottom of the jacket between the jacket liner and fleece. I first thought that, with the shoulder vents always open, I would get cold, but I did not.
Overall I am sold on the Windstopper fabric. Windstopper takes the wild chill factor out of the ride equation. I feel zero wind on my upper body now when riding.
This jacket is a tight fit by design. I am a skinny 6 foot 145 pound guy and I choose a large jacket. I could have fit in a medium but wanted a little room in case I wanted to put more than one layer under it for extreme cold conditions. I also have broad shoulders and I thought the medium would be too small in this area. The large fits perfect through the shoulders.
I used to hate riding in the cold but now I don't mind and even choose to ride outside in the cold instead of using the indoor trainer. Hope this helps you decide. Have a great ride.

4Great jacket, warm but vents well, sometimes too well!
By Allen
This is my first Castelli article ever. I slimmed down a bit from cycling the last 2 years and wanted something tighter fitting than my Gore Phantom jackets. Enter the Espresso Due.

The jacket is made from Gore's Windstopper membrane, albeit a different one than what Gore uses on its jackets. Castelli's is stretchier, allowing for a tighter fit that hugs, shapes, and moves with the body easily.

I am 5'7", 150lbs, 35" chest. Castelli's chart says I'm a small and that's what I went with. Fits like a glove! I've tried other Castelli jackets since this one and I seem to be a consistent small, save for the Zoncolan jacket which I had to get a medium to fit.

This jacket is super warm. It is Windstopper everywhere, and medium pile fleece everywhere (by comparison, the Gore Bike Wear Men's Xenon 2.0 SO Jacket is also windstopper everywhere, but only has a low pile fleece in strategic locations, none in some locations to prevent overheating). The Castelli has lots of venting options though, 2 that are manually regulated by the rider (front chest and arm zips) and 2 that are not (shoulder vents, rear pocket vents).

Castelli rates the jacket 32F-50sF. I think the range is a little bit lower, maybe like 25-45. It is very warm, but vents really well. If you have too much in your rear jacket pockets, it actually can blow too much air back there, especially after you begin to sweat. Pack a little less back there and you should be fine.

It's a great jacket, love the look and love the hand of the fabric. Easily my favorite jacket from a fit, looks, color (got the red), and performance perspective. I took one star off because of the vents that are always 'open'. I prefer if my vents were controlled by me. But other than that, this is one serious piece of kit!
